[Malaysia] Software Piracy Level in Malaysia

The Business Software Alliance (BSA) launched the Seventh Annual Global Software Piracy Study on May 11, 2010.

BSA worked together with IDC, a market research firm in conducting the study on PC software piracy rates in many countries worldwide. The study encompassed piracy of all sorts of software running on PCs, including operating systems, systems software such as databases and security packages and applications software.

The study indicates that the overall global software piracy rate increased from 41 to 43 percent in 2009. Also, software piracy was still a serious problem in Asia Pacific in which the biggest losses of the world from the use of pirated software was found.

The software piracy level in Malaysia fell only 1%, reaching 58% in 2009. However, the commercial value of pirated software in the country actually increased from US$368 million in 2008 to US$453 million in 2009.

Jeffrey Hardee, the vice president of BSA revealed that more than two thirds of PCs and notebooks sold in Malaysia used pirated software worth RM1.586 billion and the largest number of buyers were individuals, i.e. 910,000 transactions; with the rest being companies.
