The first television station in Indonesia is State-Owned Television of the Republic of Indonesia (TVRI) established in 1962 in Jakarta. Its initial program was the 17th Commemoration of Independence of the Republic of Indonesia at the State Palace, the broadcasting of which was still in black and white. TVRI then covered Asian Games held in Jakarta in August 1962.
 
TVRI had an exclusive right to broadcast in Indonesia before 1989 when the first private television stations, RCTI, emerged RCTI in Jakarta, followed by SCTV in Surabaya in 1990. Since 2000, TVRI has been turned to be Limited Incorporation which shared by the Government.

Subscribed television or pay TV is a particular term used for TV broadcasting services specifically aimed for audience willing to pay (subscribe) periodically for the services. The services are commonly provided via digital cable, analog, or satellite. However, recently, the use other worldwide digital methods has multiplied.
 
The first subscribed television in Indonesia is Indovision established on 8 August 1988. Indovision is also known as the first subscribed television utilizing Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS).
